Hi Everyone,
The month of May is off to a fantastic start! We have many special events taking place this month, and we are very excited about all of them.
First off: Kicking out Cancer Fundraiser
Since January of this year, we are very pleased to say that we have successfully raised and donated close to $4000 to the BC Cancer foundation. We are extremely happy with this result, and are optimistic that we will be reaching our goal of $10,000 by the end of this year.
We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support we have been receiving from students, parents, and the school boards around the area. This fundraiser would not be possible without your participation and support, so thank you all very much for all you have done.
Second: Golden League tournament
Last Saturday the West Van Karate Academy played host to over 150 athletes from 8 different schools (some as far away as Vancouver Island). The athletes ranged in age from as young as 5 to old as 16, and featured many current National Team members, Provincial Team members, and BC Winter Games champions. We are pleased to say that the tournament was a complete success! All of the athletes had a great time, and no serious injuries occurred.
We are proud of all who participated! Each athlete was well-prepared both mentally and physically, and each demonstrated a respectful attitude and sporting spirit in both victory and defeat.
It is important to understand the objective of competition before choosing to partake in a tournament. The main focus should NOT be on winning. It is far more important to emphasize the growth of the athlete. That means we must focus on testing our skills, stepping outside of our comfort zone/learning to deal with nervousness, and learn from our mistakes in each match. Of course, competition should be fun! The Golden League tournament format is specifically designed for fun, and development. We are pleased to see so many young athletes taking a step in the right direction in bettering themselves as people and as athletes.
Third: Belt Testing (May 29th)
We will be having our belt testing on Thursday at the end of this month. Please let us know in advance if you will not be attending so we can plan for a make-up test.
Stay focused and keep training hard!
