COMPETITION RECOMMENDED PATHWAY
Having the correct introduction to competition is imperative for athlete enjoyment and long term athlete development. We recommend gradually exposing athletes to more competitive events as confidence and competence increases. We first begin with events low in stress and high in fun! As confidence in creases we move to more competitive environments. Still, athletes always should be having fun and enjoying the competition experience even at the elite levels of competition!
Level 1 – ‘Introduction to Competition’ with other friendly dojos in the area with similar philosophies and objectives
Suitable Events: Golden League Skills Competition (ages 5-10), Golden League Kumite Cup (ages 7-13)
Level 2 – ‘Local Competitions’ Here athletes attend events around the lower mainland and are exposed to single elimination style competitions. By this stage athletes should have a decent understanding of the competition format and must have all required competitive equipment.
Suitable Events: Golden League Kumite Cup (ages 7-13), Sato Cup (ages 8+ with Sensei’s approval)
Level 3 – ‘Competitive’ By this stage athletes should feel comfortable with the competition process and have clear goals they hope to achieve for each event.
Suitable Events: Canada Open, BC Provincial Championships, National Championships
Level 4 – International
Suitable Events: WKF Series A events, US Open, Jr. Olympics, PKF Championships, WKF World Championships
